Catholic Religious Education in Secondary Schools in Aberdeen

As you may be aware, Catholic R. E. was previously available in three Aberdeen Secondary Schools. In practice, however, this provision ceased a few years ago in two of those schools, and remained only in Aberdeen Grammar School.

The new arrangement (sometimes referred to as “peripatetic” because Catholic R E teachers may travel between several schools) has gradually been replacing the previous arrangement over the last few years. Aberdeen City Council now undertakes to make Catholic R. E. available in all its Secondary Schools provided that there is an express demand for Catholic R. E.

This revised system will enable the whole City to have access to Catholic R. E. but only where a demand is shown to exist. As the new system is demand-driven it is therefore imperative that all parents and guardians request that children receive Catholic Religious Education at Secondary School.

There are three different situations in which parents should make this request:

  1. A family is moving into Aberdeen, and is enrolling the child in an Aberdeen City Secondary School (at any level from S1 to S4) for the first time;
  2. The child is in P7 in an Aberdeen City Primary School (Catholic or not) and is now enrolling in an Aberdeen City Secondary School;
  3. The child is already attending an Aberdeen City Secondary School but has not previously requested Catholic R. E.

In situation (1) and. in situation (2) the enrolment-form issued by the Aberdeen City Education Department will have a section asking whether Catholic R. E. is requested, and this section should be answered accordingly. In situation (3) the parent or guardian should make the request themselves direct to the Head Teacher.

If you make a request for Catholic R. E. in the Secondary School, please inform your parish priest, Fr. Keith.

My thanks for your help.
